SANCTUARY TABLE

I used to love to go out for dinner. When we were first married that’s just about all we did. There were compelling motivators for our lust of other people’s cooking. First, I wasn’t a very good cook. I did get better with practice and I love to cook now. 

But the single biggest reason for our dining out [and it’s a good one] is we simply didn’t have a kitchen. Oh, we did have kitchens now and then. But our chronic home-renovating nearly always left us with an empty hole where this sacred gathering space should be. 

Months of not having kitchens leads to a certain longing…a longing for the kind of intimate conversation that is difficult to be had in the center of a busy restaurant. Our family, more than most, learned the value of what I now call the Sanctuary Table from the absence of it. 

For me, the Sanctuary Table is the act of cooking for someone else and inviting them into that sacred space of communion that draws out the best in people - that provokes real and intimate conversation in a relaxed, unhurried moment-in-time.

I’ve noticed that people rarely cook for one another anymore. When we make time together it’s nearly always centered around making reservations. But there seems to be an awakening coming…and I want to lead that charge. 

I believe now, more than ever, it's time to connect face-to-face. To open home and hearts. To sacrifice the hand to the act of preparing and cooking, infusing each dish with love. 

This is what Breaking Bread is supposed to be. Joy-filled. Pampered. Delicious in every detail.
